The traditional way of a union for a couple in this culture is by family arrangements, in most cases the importance of the economic factor of both families.

Egyptian wedding traditions

  1. Couples meet through friends, family or the church. 
  2. Before a public declaration, a ceremony called ‘Je Peniot’ is held so that the groom can ask for the bride’s hand.
  3. During the Je Peniot, families organize which customs they will decide to honor the mahr and/or shabka. 
  4. Marh or Dowry is the payment to be made by the groom to his bride’s family. 
  5. Shabaka is a gift in gold and precious stones presented by the future groom. 
  6. After these agreements the families will read Yekteb Ketaboh, that is the marriage contract, there are all the details of their engagement. 
  7. After the contract, the bride and groom have to set a date for the wedding. 

Egyptian wedding dress

Nowadays, brides don’t need to wear traditional or very cultural wedding dresses, they can wear something more modern and, if they want, choose if they will have something cultural in their design.  Men can wear an elegant and modern dress, it is not necessary to wear a suit that represents the Egyptian culture on your wedding day.  The guests can wear white or light colors, it all depends on the conditions set by the bride and groom, the only condition that exists for male guests is that they must wear long pants, since shorts are considered as underwear.

Egyptian wedding rings

Within their cultural customs, the rings are something simple and straightforward, for the bride it is in gold and for the groom it is in silver. It can be used as an engagement ring, it should be worn on the right hand. On the day of the wedding, when the union is made official, the bride and groom can move their rings to their left ring finger.

Engagement Party 

The engagement party is organized by the bride’s family, usually at the bride’s parents’ home, in a hotel or an elegant restaurant, where the groom’s family and friends of the couple can attend.  During this feast, the Shabaka or Marh is presented in a formal manner so that their marriage will have the blessing to which they are culturally accustomed. By rule and custom, the bride and groom cannot be away from the gathering.

The most common place to celebrate this wedding is churches, since, it complies with all their cultural traditions.
